Inertia support by wind turbines: a study at Bares wind farm
Increasing renewable energy penetration has decreased the grid’s inertia due to the power electronic interface with the grid. In this study, ENERJISA’s BARES wind farm has been modelled in a simulation environment. Each wind turbine stores almost 18 MJ kinetic energy in the rated speed. A part of this kinetic energy is extracted in the frequency decrease instants in order to enable wind turbines to provide inertial support resulting in a lower RoCof and higher frequency nadir in the system.
